Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently met with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, sparking speculations about a potential merger of opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service monitored by FRED EZEH of The Sun, Atiku clarified the purpose of the meeting, stating that it was a routine gathering among opposition party members, which he deemed healthy for Nigeria’s democracy.

He dismissed concerns about challenges arising from the choice of presidential candidate, asserting confidence in the process.
Addressing potential scenarios where he or Peter Obi may need to yield their ambitions to support another candidate, Atiku reiterated his commitment to the party’s decisions. He affirmed his readiness to support a candidate from the South-East, such as Peter Obi, if the party so decides.
Regarding the ongoing merger discussions, Atiku disclosed that talks are ongoing, but declined to specify a conclusion timeline, citing the need for the right timing.
Responding to perceptions of his continued involvement in opposition politics despite calls for him to step back, Atiku emphasized the importance of addressing the nation’s challenges and expressed his dedication to improving Nigeria’s welfare.
Regarding his age and the possibility of younger politicians taking the lead, Atiku emphasized that age should not inhibit anyone’s aspirations, affirming that democracy allows individuals of all ages to pursue political endeavors.
