Atletico Madrid will not pay a €3-million clause to allow on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to play should they be paired against his parent club Chelsea.
With the UEFA Champions League semi-final draw set to take place on Friday, Courtois would have been in an awkward position if Atletico were to draw the Blues, but the Spanish club have confirmed that he will not feature.
Speaking to Spanish radio Onda Cero, he said: “It is a figure that we cannot pay,” Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.
Courtois is in his third season on-loan at the Vicente Calderon from Chelsea having signed from Genk for £7-million in 2011. The 21-year-old has made nine appearances for the Spaniards in Europe this season. (kickoffnigeria)
