Nsukka (Enugu State) – Prof. Aneze Okoro, the author of “One Week One Trouble’’, a literature book, has urged the government to take urgent steps to address the poor reading habit among most Nigerians.
Okoro, who is a professor of Medicine and Dermatology, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka on Tuesday, that several Nigerians, especially the youth don’t have time to read books.
He warned that if the trend continued, most authors might be discouraged from writing books.
“If nothing was done to address this poor reading habit, generation yet unborn may not see books to read and know the tradition and culture of their communities.
“It is unfortunate that many youths have no time to read books, but can devout hours to watch European football matches and home movies.

“If this ugly trend persists, many authors may be discouraged to continue to dedicate their time on literary work as a result of low patronage,’’ Okoro said.
The author also advised upcoming authors to write books that were not too voluminous, adding that this would encourage people to buy, read and finish as well as understand the message.
“Given the poor reading culture in this county, people will be scared to buy voluminous books that will take them weeks to finish.’’ (NAN)
