BADAGRY – Mr Huntonyon Bamgbose, the Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, on Monday warned that cutting of trees would be punished.
Bamgbose gave the warning at the Suntan Beach in Badagry at the 2014 Annual Lagos State Tree-Planting Campaign.
“Cutting down trees is punishable under the law; violators shall be prosecuted according to the law,” he said.
He noted that cutting tree affects the eco- system.
“People should cultivate the habit of planting tree and desist from cutting trees.
“Since this place is a rural area, there are many fetish beliefs attached to trees; so, in some cases, people see trees as dangerous.
“They attach spiritual problems to some particular trees and they believe that the best way to get rid of the problem is by cutting down the trees.[eap_ad_2]
“They should know that trees help the environment in so many ways.
“We have been carrying out various enlightenment programmes on the importance of trees.”
Bamgbose said that the council had embarked on sensitisation to prevent the outbreak of epidemic in the council area and the entire Badagry Community.
“It is a thing of joy that our efforts have begun to yield positive results, especially on health-related issues, since Badagry West is a rural area,” he said.
He advised residents to be law-abiding.
