SOKOTO – Alhaji Abdullahi Bafarawa, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday in Sokoto urged the Federal Government to re-equip various security agencies across the nation’s international borders.
He said it was imperative following the influx of arms and armed insurgents into the country.
Bafarawa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that re-equipping the agencies would provide them added impetus in checkmating armed smugglers and insurgency.
He said that Nigerians desire for transparent 2015 elections would only be possible by a conscious effort to control arms smugglers.
According to him, most of the arms in the hands of the terrorists come through the nation’s porous borders.
Bafarawa observe that “effective border patrol as well as effective working relationship among the security officers attached to borders will ensure the arrest and prosecution of those involved in these deadly business”.
The APC chieftain also called for active support from the border communities in providing intelligence reports to the security agencies.
He said that community leaders must educate their people on the need to assist in apprehending criminals, especially those involved in arms importation into the country.
He said that Nigerians must appreciate that security matters should not be left in the hands of security officers alone (NAN)
