A readout to correspondents by UN Spokesman stated that the phone call was initiated by Poroshenko, who appealed to the Secretary-General on behalf of Ukrainian national, Ms Nadiya Savchenko.

Savchenko was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Tuesday, March 22, by the Donetsk City Court in the Rostov-on-Don region of the Russian Federation.

The Secretary-General informed the President that he continued to closely follow Savchenko’s case, including reported breaches of due process and fair trial rights.

Savchenko, a pilot, was found guilty in Russia of charges relating to the death of two Russian journalists.

She was sentenced to 22 years in jail after being convicted of directing artillery fire which killed them in Eastern Ukraine in June 2014. (NAN)
