Bauchi – Hajiya Hadiza Abubakar, wife of Gov. Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State, has set up an NGO named Bauchi Sustainable Women Economic Empowerment and Peace Initiative (B-SWEEP) to economically empower women in the state.
She announced this on Friday in Bauchi while addressing various women organisations at the grand finale of her tour of the 20 Local Government Areas in the state.
The governor’s wife said the objectives of B-SWEEP were to economically empower women through skills acquisition, maternal and child health care services, agriculture, education for girl child drop-outs and sustenance of peace within families.
She said that the NGO would touch and stimulate the life of women and children, especially those in the rural areas.
According to her, she believes the organisation will tackle certain problems that bedevil women and children in the state and help reduce over-dependency of women on their husbands.
“In every society, when women are economically empowered, provided with proper health care delivery, sound education, and they are living in peace and harmony, it will be considered as a developed society.
“In order to complement the efforts being made by my husband, I will ensure that the provision of free drugs for pregnant women and children under five years is sustained,’’ she said.
According to her, cooperative societies will also be created to enable women access credit facilities to boost food production.
