Bayelsa Govt. commences evacuation of refuse in Yenagoa

Yenagoa – Residents of Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital, on Thursday heaved a sigh of relief as the state government commenced massive evacuation of refuse heaps across the town.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the designated refuse collection points had been overwhelmed by refuse that covered the roads and causing traffic hiccups.
The development was sequel to non evacuation of the waste dump sites for prolonged periods since early December 2015.

NAN reports that refuse disposal trucks and officials of the Environmental Sanitation Authority were seen evacuating the accumulated refuse.
The smell from decomposing heap of refuse had been a source of concern to residents as the streets and roads in Yenagoa, and its environs were littered with refuse.
Some of the designated refuse dump sites within the town receiving attention are, Igbogene, Yenegwe, Akenfa, Agudama-Epie, Akenpai, Edepie, Etegwe, Okutukutu, Opolo-Epie, Biogbolo-Epie, Yenizue-Gene, Kpansia, Yenizue-Epie, Okaka, Ekeki, all overflowing with refuse heaps.
The residents had resorted to setting some of the refuse heaps ablaze to reduce the foul smell and thus polluting the air in Yenagoa
Reacting to the prolonged delays in evacuating refuse in the state, Chairman of Bayelsa Environmental Sanitation Authority, Oforji Oboku, told NAN that the agency was incapacitated by funding constraints.
He assuring the people that the matter was being addressed and the state capital would be cleaned up in a couple of days.
“We have some funding challenges due to the economic meltdown but we will overcome it,” he said. (NAN)
