Yenagoa – Bayelsa government has earmarked N350 million for the take-off of the state’s Higher Education Students Loan Scheme.
The Governor, Seriake Dickson, announced this during the launching of the scheme and distribution of textbooks and uniforms to public primary and secondary schools on Friday in Yenagoa.
Dickson said that the loan was aimed at supporting the state’s undergraduates in their educational pursuit.
“The scheme is meant to provide help to students who have financial difficulties. They will pay back the loans once they are employed after their graduation.
“I, therefore, direct the Higher Education Students Loan Scheme Board to immediately process and release funds to deserving students.
“This is one of our landmark programmes; this fund is to support indigent and brilliant children.
“We are making the provision because you can’t tell who will be the next president, next governor; the next top scientist or where the next captain of industry will come from,” he said.
In his remark, the Commissioner for Education, Mr Jonathan Overbite, noted that the state government also distributed over 350 million copies of books to students.
Overbite also said that the state government had also distributed uniforms to various school heads to deliver to their students.
