Abuja- An official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has called on motorists and the public to be conscious of their health status in order reduce accidents on the roads.
Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Commander, Central Business District Unit Command, made the call on Wednesday in Abuja during a five days health workshop for the motoring public in the territory.
Ogungbemide told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that almost 100 people were examined by medical personnel.
He said that some of the people with poor health condition were ignorant of their status.
“The unit is conducting free visual test, sugar level test and blood pressure checks for the public, especially motorists to commemorate the achievements of Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, the Commission’s Corps Marshal.
“Some of the motorists are not conscious of their health status and this can lead to accidents if these conditions get worse on the road.
“We have been doing acuity test, sugar level and blood pressure tests because poor condition of any of these condition in any driver has serious implication on safety of our roads,” Ogungbemide said.
The unit commander said he was also using the occasion to remind motorists in the FCT to be conscious of the high number of interceptions in the Central Business District because most accidents happen around them.
“The Central Business District has the highest number of interceptions; the bulk of the crashes we have recorded in the past have to do with dangerous driving at these interceptions.
“Motorists should always be careful when approaching such places in order to reduce accidents in the district,” he said.

NAN recalls that Oyeyemi, who assumed the leadership on July 23, 2014, is the first Corps Marshal to rise through the ranks of the commission to the top.
Oyeyemi had been leading the FRSC in the drive to ensure sanity on the roads while maintaining cordial relationship with stakeholders in the road management sector. (NAN)
