Brussels – Eleven people have been arrested and taken in for questioning in connection with an investigation into the return of foreign terrorist fighters from Syria, the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday.
The destination of the fighters from Syria remained unclear, as did the role that the 11 suspects may have played in the scheme.
The investigation carried out Tuesday night was “completely independent’’ from the cases involving terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015 and in Brussels in March 2016, the statement noted.
Authorities searched nine houses in the Brussels area, though no weapons or explosives were found.
A judge was expected to decide on further detention of the 11 people arrested later on Wednesday.
