BENIN – Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin on Saturday defeated Akwa Starlets FC of Uyo 1-0 to win the Edo FA/FROT Group South-South Champion of Champions Football Tournament.
Insurance FC scored their goal in the 72nd minute of the game through Peter Iyamu, who put the ball in between the legs of goalkeeper Chinedu Obagwu.
With the victory Bendel Insurance FC thus won the competition’s main prize money of N1 million as champions of the tournament.
Speaking after the match, the Head Coach of Bendel Insurance FC, Roland Ewere, rated the match’s standard as high and very useful for him.
“It is a match that will help prepare my players for the forthcoming Nigeria National League (NNL),’’ he said.
On his part, Patrick Udo, the Head Coach of Akwa Starlets, lauded his players for their performance during the 90 minutes of the match.
Speaking also, the sponsor of the tournament, President of the FROT Group, Frank Momoh, called for more sponsorship of sports in Nigeria.
President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, said Edo should strive to be great again in football, as it was once known to be.
“But it needs to be encouraged to push more and achieve greatness.’’
