Tsamiya (Kebbi) – The Benin Republic Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Muhutalo Laleye, on Thursday pledged that his country would investigate allegations of extortion against its border officials by Nigerians.
Laleye made the promise when he visited Tsamiya border settlement along with Kebbi Governor, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the visit was part of efforts to amicably resolve the two countries’ boundary disputes.
The allegations were made by Nigerian policemen manning the border, sequel to complaints by residents of the area.
He also promised to work closely with the Kebbi Government to adopt measures toward ending the border disputes, stressing that the disagreements would not be allowed to deteriorate.

The Kebbi Governor had earlier appealed to the border communities to live peacefully with one another, assuring that the disputes would be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
NAN reports that the governor and the ambassador were accompanied by Dr Mohammed Ahmed, Director-General of Nigeria’s Boundary Commission.
They were in the area on the instruction’s of President Muhammadu Buhari, to meet with officials of Benin Republic on ways to amicably resolve the border disputes between the two countries.
NAN observed that police and military personnel had been drafted to the disputed areas as a proactive measure to forestall any breakdown of law and order. (NAN)
