Beninese, 28, remanded in prison for killing step daughter

Ibadan  –  An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan on Tuesday ordered one Asiminua Yarego, accused of strangling his step daughter to death, to be remanded at Agodi prison.

The Chief Magistrate, Alhaja Modinat Akanni said Yarego would remain in custody till March 25, when the case would come up for mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Isiaka Laaro, told the court that Yarego, a labourer from Takurun in Benin Republic, had strangles his 3-year-old step daughter on Jan. 20, at Okologbo area, Irawo near Ago -Are.

Laaro said , ” on the fateful day Yarego’s wife dropped Bamidele with her husband Yarego on her way to the farm and enjoined him to take care of her.

“After the wife’s departure two other children were playing with Bamidele when Yarego sent the two children to buy drugs for him that he had headache .

“The children wanted to take Bamidele along with them, but Yarego declined on the excuse that she was small.”

He said after the children returned and asked of the girl, the accused said he had no idea what happened to her.

The prosecutor said a search party combed the area and found the corpse of the girl in a nearby bush close to the accused’s compound.

Laaro said the offence is contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.
