Makurdi – The Benue House of Assembly on Thursday passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Mr Terkimbi Ikyange.
This followed a motion moved by Mr Terhemba Chabo (APC-Gboko West) stating that since the emergence of Ikyange on June 5, he had not fallen short of his duties.
Chabo noted that the speaker had demonstrated high level of competence and uncommon wisdom as well as humility both in the discharge of his official duties and his interaction with colleagues.
“This is the first time that we are having a presiding officer that is non-partisan.
“Committees that had never been headed by opposition members like Lands, Finance, Health, Works, House Services and Water Resources are now chaired by our brothers from the opposition party (PDP) ”, he said.
He said that his practical demonstration of statesmanship, patriotism, fairness, equity and justice had earned him their confidence.
Chabo said in spite of his sterling leadership quality, a section of the media had cast aspersion on him.
This, he said followed the High Court judgment which directed INEC to conduct election into Mbagwa the suppressed constituency in his local government (Ushongo).
“We condemn in its entirety media reports of his sack and urge the public to disregard such a fake report.
“To the best of our knowledge the recent judgment does not in any way affect his mandate”, he said.
The motion was seconded by Mr Adam Okloho (APC-Adoka/Ugboju), saying that it was apt and timely.
All the members that spoke on the matter said that the speaker ought to be commended for striving to pilot the affairs of the state legislature in the right direction.

Responding, Ikyange said that he was highly delighted by the show of concern and love shown him by his colleagues.
“No encouragement is greater than what you have just demonstrated here and I promise not to abuse the rare privilege given me to man the affairs of the assembly”, he said. (NAN)
