ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that it was former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon’s refusal to abide by the agreement reached at the Aburi, Ghana in 1967 that led to the Nigerian Civil War.
Fani-Kayode, who reiterated that Gowon is an elder stateman he revered, however said contrary to Gowon’s claim, the defunct Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu told no lie. Stressing that Gowon agreed to all the terms in Aburi but that when he got back to Nigeria,he reneged on the agreement, insisting that it was the non-compliance with the Aburi Accord that caused the civil war.
He disclosed this on his twitter handle @realFFK on Wednesday while reacting to the statement by the former head of state to the effect that Ojukwu caused the civil war by lying about what transpired in Aburi.
In the tweet Chief Femi said, “Gen. Yakubu Gowon, an elder statesman who I revere, said Ojukwu caused the civil war by lying about what transpired in Aburi. This is false. Ojukwu told no lie. Gowon agreed to all the terms in Aburi but when he got home he reneged on the agreement. This is what led to the civil war.”
Sundiata Post recalls that before the commencement of the civil war that lasted for 30 months, Ojukwu had met with Gowon in Aburi, Ghana, for a peace talk on how to reconcile the controversies facing the country then to avert possible escalation and drift to civil war. But the agreement reached in Aburi was not followed upon the return of the duo to Nigeria, giving way for the civil war.
