Beijing – BMW said on Friday that it sold more than 720,000 vehicles in China in 2019, a record number since the German carmaker entered the Chinese market 15 years earlier.
The Munich-based firm reported in a statement that the record-delivery also represents a year-on-year increase of over 13 per cent with the X1, X5, X6, and 5 Series models being the most popular among Chinese consumers.
According to the Regional President/CEO for BMW China, Jochen Coller, BMW Group achieved high-quality growth and became the number-one premium manufacturer in China in 2019.
Coller also noted progress in new energy and autonomous vehicle development.
In 2019, the BMW Group delivered over 2.52 million BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce vehicles worldwide, cementing its position as the world’s foremost premium carmaker for the 16th year running.
BMW first entered China as an importer in 1994, later constructing its first joint-venture plant in the country’s North-Eastern rust belt in 2003.
Since 2015, China has been the biggest market worldwide for BMW, which together with fellow German automakers Audi and Mercedes-Benz has dominated the country’s growing appetite for luxury cars.
