PORT HARCOURT – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Saturday that the death toll resulting from a boat accident in Bony Island, had risen to 12.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on August 29, a Port Harcourt- bound passenger boat from Bonny Island, had an accident mid sea, and sank.
Dr Onimode Bandele, Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, South South zone, told NAN in Port-Harcourt, that divers had recovered two more bodies, in addition to the initial 10 brought out from the sea. [eap_ad_1] He said 22 passengers were rescued after the accident, and taken to hospitals in Bonny.
‘’ Our investigations showed that the capacity of the boat is 25, while it carried 34 passengers on the fateful day,” he said.
Bandele recalled that the same boat had hit an object on Aug. 28, resulting in the damage of its body, a day before the recent tragedy.
The Co’ordinator said the Agency was not sure if the boat was repaired before being put to use the next day, Aug.29, the day the mishap that led to the death of 12 persons, occurred. (NAN)
