ABUJA- The Body of Benchers has described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, as one of its worthy ambassadors.
The chairman, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), stated this when he and other officials visited the minister in Abuja on Friday.
Awomolo explained that the Body of Benchers comprises legal practitioners of the highest distinction in the profession.
He added that the body is responsible for the formal call to the Bar and disciplines erring lawyers.
“The Body of Benchers represents men and women of the highest distinction in our profession.
“We are regarded as the soul, coordinator, or spirit guiding the legal profession and justice administration,” he said.
He said the delegation visited to thank the minister for intervening in judiciary affairs.
The interventions were not limited to the FCT, as Wike also supported judicial welfare in Rivers as governor.
He thanked Wike for recognising the judiciary’s needs and offering assistance where necessary.
“This afternoon, I am honoured to lead this delegation to thank you for being a faithful member of our body.
“I appreciate your responsive interventions in judiciary matters.
“You are a good representative of the legal profession in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
“The President even called you a good man on live television. Nothing is better than that. Continue to excel as our ambassador,” he said.
Awomolo said the body of distinguished legal professionals closely observes Wike’s contributions.
“We will always express our gratitude for your commitment and loyalty to Nigeria.
“Thank you, sir, for your dedication and support for the judiciary,” he added.
He commended Wike for providing comfortable accommodation for judicial officers, describing it as a “responsive intervention.”
He noted that the move aligns with the separation of powers among the government’s three arms.
This, he said, counters misconceptions that the gesture aims to influence the judiciary.
The visit was also to update the minister on the body’s activities and introduce the incoming chairman, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Awomolo requested Wike’s continued support for the judiciary.
Responding, Wike reaffirmed his commitment to the judiciary’s development.
He explained that projects such as the Abuja Court of Appeal Annex and Judges’ Quarters were approved by President Bola Tinubu.
He said funds for these projects were budgeted, approved by Tinubu, and passed by the National Assembly.
The same applies to the Nigerian Law School staff quarters, with two hostels planned for the 2025 budget.
“Without budget approval, supporting the Body of Benchers and the judiciary would have been impossible.
“The Court of Appeal complex and judges’ quarters were appropriated accordingly.
“I will always support the legal profession and owe no apology for enhancing judiciary performance.
“I will not miss this opportunity to contribute to its growth,” Wike said. (NAN)
