Lagos – The remains of Dr Nwabu Mgbemena, a former Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) will arrive in Nigeria from the U.S. on June 30.
Mgbemena died of cancer on April 22 in New Jersey. He was 71.
His long-time associate, Chief Tony Idigo, told NAN on Sunday in Lagos that Mgbemena’s family had resolved to bury him on July 15 at his home town, Obosi in Anambra.
Idigo said that media executives, colleagues and well-wishers would be given opportunity to pay their last respects to Mgbemena, when he would be laid in state by 3 p.m. at the NAN Media Centre in Ignamu.
The Ikolo of Aguleri said that a Christian wake would be held on July 14 at 4 p.m. at Mgbemen’a country home, opposite Girls’ Secondary School, Obosi.
He said that Mgbemena’s remains would be interred at his compound after a funeral service to be held at 10.00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ugamuma, Obosi.
Mgbemena was one of the original nine editors employed at the inception of NAN in 1978.
He later rose through the ranks to become Editor-in-Chief, General Manager and later Managing Director of the agency.
Before coming to NAN he had lectured at the then Department of Journalism/Mass Communications at the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka.
Until his death, he was a lecturer in the Mass Communications Department at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. (NAN)
