YOLA -The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Thursday confirmed that over 100,000 local farmers had been displaced by insurgency attacks in Adamawa State.
The Director of the ministry in the state, Dr Walia Hamman, made the disclosure in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola.
Hamman also confirmed that about 52 farmers were attacked and killed on their farms by the insurgents.
According to him, over 100 hectares of farmlands are equally abandoned by the farmers in the state. [eap_ad_1] “Due to the insurgency attacks in Adamawa, 69,000 local farmers were displaced and 37 were killed in Madagali Local Government Area in the last one month, while about 48,000 were displaced and 15 killed in Michika Local Government Area of the state.’’
He said that 100,000 hectares of farmlands were either abandoned or destroyed due to the insurgency attacks in the two local government areas.
The director said that the farming activities in those areas attacked were at low level, saying that most of the displaced farmers had resolved not to go back to their respective farm even after the insurgency.
He said the ministry at the federal and state levels were making arrangements on how to assist the farmers to improve on their living condition. (NAN)
