In the early hours of Saturday, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched an assault on a military base in Gujba town, Yobe State, resulting in the death of a soldier.
The Yobe State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the attack, stating that the assailants also set fire to a military patrol vehicle. According to reliable local sources, the insurgents arrived in the town around midnight, firing indiscriminately before targeting the military base.
However, troops swiftly responded, driving the attackers into the surrounding bush.Residents recounted the terror they experienced during the attack, with many fleeing for safety into nearby bushes. Modu Bahna, a resident of Gujba, described the chaotic scene as gunfire erupted in the dead of night.
Another resident, Dala Bukar, noted that while the insurgents targeted the military base and killed a soldier, they did not harm civilians or engage in looting.Abdulkarim confirmed the loss of the soldier in the attack, stating that security forces, including civilian joint task force (CJTF) members, engaged the suspected terrorists.
The Maiduguri-Damaturu-Gujba-Biu Road has witnessed an increase in attacks by suspected Boko Haram militants in recent months, posing a significant security challenge in the region.
