YOLA – The Adamawa State government has set up a school a the Damare Camp in Yola for the children of persons displaced by Boko Haram.
An official of the Adamawa Emergency Management Agency, Mr Sylvanus Papka, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the children had begun to attend classes.
Papka, who is the Director of Rescue, Relief and Rehabilitation, said the makeshift classes were being run by volunteer teachers from Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola and American University of Nigeria, Yola.
He said there were also teachers among the displaced persons who had volunteered to teach the children.
Papka noted that 2,558 children had been registered in the camp as of Wednesday, comprising of 1,268 boys and 1,290 girls.
According to him, the parents are being encouraged to bring their children and wards to the school.
Also speaking with NAN, the Head Teacher of the school, Mr Jacob Nihanta, said that no fewer than 497 pupils had been registered and that classes had begun in earnest.
Nihanta said plans were underway to relocate the classes to a nearby primary school if the number continued to grow. (NAN)
