NEW YORK – The Federal Government has expressed gratitude to its bilateral, multilateral partners and other friendly nations for their cooperation in its efforts to defeat and uproot the terror group, Boko Haram.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Aminu Wali, expressed the gratitude during a debate on “threats to international peace and security’’ held at the UN Security Council chambers in New York at the weekend.
This contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media Affairs, Alhaji Bashir Baba, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The minister said that with sustained international support and the government’s unwavering determination, the threat posed by Boko Haram would be history.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
Wali said that Nigeria had been working closely with its immediate neighbors – Chad, Cameroon, Niger and the Republic of Benin, to create a multinational joint task force to combat insecurity in the sub region.
Wali added that the Federal Government had put in place legal and regulatory frameworks to make it extremely difficult for terrorist groups and criminal networks to operate in Nigeria.
He warned that the war against criminality was an on-going one and called for more cooperation from Nigeria’s neighbors and international partners.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
He said the cooperation was needed to close all available spaces for terrorist groups.
Wali acknowledged the positive roles played by the UN organs such as United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC); Counter Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF) and the Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
During the debate, which was chaired by Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chadian Foreign Affairs and African Integration Minister, member nations were advised to enhance strategies and cooperation to prevent terrorism.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”8″]
They were also urged to build the capacity to secure their various borders and intensify investigations and the prosecution of terrorists and organised criminals.
The statement said speakers at the forum condemned terror groups such as Boko Haram, Al shabbab and Al Qaeda in the Sahel Sahara and the Magreb regions.(NAN)
