Reports from Gombi local Government of Adamawa State indicate about 10 soldiers and dozens of insurgents were feared killed as fighting intensified for the control of the town which is seen as a gateway to Yola, the state capital.
The recent upscale of offensive by the military follows an avowal made by the insurgents that they will soon capture the state capital, a promise they had backed with action which led to the fall of many towns and villages.
With the capture of Gombi, the insurgents are now in control of seven local governments of Madagali, Maiha, Mubi North, Mubi South, Michika and Hong local governments, and by so doing have taken one third of all local governments of the state.
Similarly, unconfirmed reports have indicated that the insurgents have recaptured Mubi town which was taken away from them by local hunters and Civilian JTF drafted to fight the insurgents, following the consistent failure of soldiers to defend the areas.
Reports indicate that the Nigerian troops are increasing their offensive to prevent the Boko Haram from gaining more grounds towards the state capital.
A source revealed that the encounter has led to casualties from both sides as many of the insurgents also suffered massive casualties as Nigerian troops kept reinforcing its men. (Leadership)
