The United States Embassy has clarified that the amount the U.S. is offering to the Multinational Joint Task Force to fight Boko Haram is $5 million, not $5 billion.
It was widely reported on Monday, June 15, 2015, that the U.S. members of the government delegation to the African Union Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, United States Embassyoffered to give to the task force $5 billion when they briefed reporters on the range of U.S. engagement in Africa.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
The U.S. Embassy which made the correction in a release said that apart from the $5 million to the AU, “we are also providing some equipment and support, and we had a number of meetings with the countries who are members of the Multinational Task Force to look at other areas that we might support.”
