Gaborone, July 8, 2015 (PANA/NAN) Botswana has erected an elephant sculpture at its biggest airport – Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA), Gaborone, to drive home its zero tolerance for poaching.
The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Tshekidi Khama, on Wednesday said the sculpture was part of the project on public art initiatives to raise awareness on environment and sustainable development.
“The elephant made out of ivory symbolises Botswana’s position in the protection of its natural resources, particularly the management and protection of the country’s valued elephants”, Khama said.
In 2014, African leaders gathered in Botswana to attend African Elephant Summit to plan and come up with a concerted action to combat poaching of elephants.
The summit delegates agreed on 14 urgent measures aimed at halting and reversing the trend in illegal killing of elephants and the illegal trade in ivory. (PANA/NAN)
