Lagos – National Boxing Coach, Sunday Nwamada, has called for early preparations for boxers toward the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic qualifiers in the Cameroon later in the month.
Nwamada told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that early training was important for the boxers to be in good shape ahead of the qualifiers.
“I am not happy about the situation of things as there are no programmes to provide the boxers the necessary exposures that they will need to be in shape for major competitions.
“Boxing needs steady training. It is not something you do and go and relax, it entails continuous process to keep boxers to be in good shape.
“Right now they are supposed out on training tours, so that they will learn new techniques and new rules in the sport,’’ he said.
He noted that the country was blessed with great boxers in virtually all weight categories. I see no reason why the country will not be ranked among the best in the world.
“So much needed to be done to get boxing back on the right track. We have boxers at the grassroots who are world-beaters, but with little exposures, we can fail to get to the world stage.

“We also call for support from the corporate world, because the federation alone cannot do it all,’’ the coach said. (NAN)
