Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, a pivotal figure in the country’s shift to multi-party democracy, has passed away at the age of 98, according to reports.
The somber announcement was made by the current President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, who confirmed Mwinyi’s passing during a state television broadcast. President Hassan disclosed that Mwinyi succumbed to his illness around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Mwinyi had been receiving treatment for lung cancer in London since November of the previous year and subsequently returned to Tanzania for further medical attention in Dar es Salaam.
