The Supreme Court has overturned a decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
Sundiata Post reports that the Supreme Court gave this ruling on Friday through a unanimous decision by a five-member panel. The court said the Court of Appeal did not have the power to declare Abure the party’s national chairman because it had earlier stated that the case was mainly about the party’s leadership.
The Supreme Court explained that leadership matters within a political party are internal issues and that courts do not have the right to decide on such matters.
The court agreed with the appeal brought by Senator Nenadi Usman and one other person, saying the appeal had merit.
It also rejected a cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction of the Labour Party, saying it was without merit.
More details will be shared later.
