According to him, the campaign’s use of social media and street outreach only reinforces public confusion around U.S. imperialism in Africa.
However, the Former Minister of Education and co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, Oby Ezekwesili said there was no ulterior motive behind their campaign.
Speaking on BBC interview programme, Hardtalk, Ezekwesili insisted that the #BackBackOurGirls campaign was not political, noting that the rally had called local and global attention to the plight of the girls.
She also stressed that there was a need for Nigerians to react decisively as a people to rescue the girls.
Reacting to allegations that the campaign amounted to psychological terrorism, the former minister said she was surprised that the presidency used that kind of language.
“We have never been political and people in the campaign are mothers and people who are genuinely aggrieved that the girls were abducted.’’
She said those in the campaign were not connected by political affiliation but a bond of shared humanity.
“I don’t understand the politics aspect. I have never been a politician. I was a minister in a presidential system of government, not a parliamentary system where I have to stand for an election to be a minister. I have never been in politics.’’
According to her, the government is in a better position to know whether negotiation or the military approach should be used to rescue the girls.
She noted that whatever option chosen, there was need to open a window to begin dialogue and no option should be dismissed.
“There could be combination of solutions. The one with better information is in a position to come up with a combination of options. What I don’t like is no action, there is need to avoid every form of inertia.”
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan on July 22, met for the first time with 57 escaped Chibok schoolgirls and their parents, 100 days after they were kidnapped.
The president promised them that he would do all he could to rescue their colleagues still in captivity.
Everybody is concerned and wants the kidnapped schoolgirls rescued. Therefore, the level of outbursts against the government by various groups campaigning for the release of the girls is disturbing (NANFeatures)
