South Sudan, which became independent in 2011, has been riven by conflict since December 2013. A dire humanitarian situation has drawn in many international aid groups to help provide food, medical care and other support to the population.
Thousands of civilians have been killed and more than 1.5 million people displaced in fighting between President Salva Kiir’s troops and rebels loyal to his former deputy, Riek Machar.
