This was revealed on Thursday during the ongoing 2015 Budget defence at the Senate before the Senate Committee on Police Affairs.
According to the overhead allocation analysis of the 2015 Budget estimates presented by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, the Force has a fleet of 13,083 vehicles, including 2,937 motorcycles nationwide.
“On the basis of estimated minimum daily fuel consumption, the cost implication is as follows: i) 8,698 patrol engine vehicles × 40 litres × N87 × 365 days = N11,048,199,600; ii) 2,937 patrol engine motorcycles × 10 litres × N87 × 365 days = N932,644,350; iii) 1,448 diesel engines × 50 litres × N160 × 365 days = N4,228,160,000; total = N16,209,003,950.
“Minimum monthly maintenance cost (PMS vehicle – N45,000; AGO vehicle – N90,000); average monthly × 11,635 PMS vehicles × 12 months = N6,282,900,000; average monthly × 1,448 AGO vehicles × 12 months = N1,563,840,000; total maintenance = N7,846,740,000; total maintenance and fuelling cost = N24,055,743,950.00,” he said.
Abba, who was represented by DIG Ibrahim Tsafe, further hinted that the Force proposed to spend the sum of N252 million on animals like dogs and horses.
“Under procurement of dogs and horses equipment and establishment of veterinary centres, these animals are essential in police operations, especially in the detection and prevention of crime and in the maintenance of law and order.
“The sum of N80,000 each is proposed for these purposes, while a total of N252,000,000 has been projected for the establishment of veterinary clinics, diagnostic and breeding centres to cater for the needs of these animals.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10”]
“To enhance the efficiency of police communication systems, N583,427,180 is earmarked for the procurement of digital communication equipment and N299,570,000 is for the installation and networking of high frequency transceivers in 37 commands.
“To enhance the capacity of the Force in the fight against violent crimes and terrorism, provision of operational equipment for counter-terrorism unit (CTU) is allocated N196,087,560 and police mobile force is N205,405,268,” he said.
Under intelligence gathering, the Force provided N92,165,852 for automated fingerprint identification system, the sum of N137,268,292 for procurement of forensic equipment, the sum of N188,263,414 for security intelligence equipment, the sum of N114,624,390 for upgrade of GSM tracking system and N151,317,073 for research and development programmes.
The Force also hinted that it included projects and programmes that will enhance partnership between the police and the public.
“The establishment of community policing projects in state commands – N78,439,024; provision of equipment for police public relations units across the country – N98,000,000 and propagation of servicom chapter in the Force – N55,903,576,” he added.
