Buhari, His Supporters and The Concept of Responsible Leadership, By Samuel Ajayi

ABUJA (Sundiata Post) One of the things God gave me the grace to change in Iya Ibeji, and which I thank God for in her life, was the need to take responsibility as a leader. In the early years of marriage, whenever I wasn’t around and I complained TO HER about something not being handled well or unattended to, there was always this blame-deflection retort from her:

“Se emi nikan ni mo wa n’ile ni?” (Was I the only one at home)

And I always responded:

“No. You were not the only one at home but whenever I am not around, everything about this house becomes your responsibility. I will never ask Dupe or Femi (two guys living with us then) unless I gave them specific assignments to carry out. If not, you are in charge and becomes responsible for EVERYTHING!”

Over a period of time, things changed and I can travel for days now and be sure that everything will be taken care of by her even beyond my expectations.

The above was for Buhari supporters. Like I told a guy, most of them do not understand what leadership is all about. To them, it is about TAKING CREDITS FOR POSITIVES AND BLAMING OTHERS FOR NEGATIVES.

Perhaps, things would have been different in this country today if they did not help the man elevate the blame game into state policy:

* Your president could not form cabinet for six months, you gave excuses for him.

* He could not stem fuel scarcity, you blamed looters.

* He could not do anything for two years, you bled 16 “locust years of PDP”.

* Inflation was spiralling out of control, you blamed the spirits.

* He keeps saying he is not aware of most things in his government, you blamed his aides.

* A leader made the gaffe that he won’t treat citizens (95/5%) equally, you blamed wailers.

* A leader made lopsided appointments, you blamed those who complained.

* A leader himself admitted that age would slow him down, you still blamed others for his old age.

* A leader terribly mishandles ethnic and religious balances, you clap for him.

* A leader could not stem violent killings in the country, you blamed those who were killed for provoking their killers.

* A leader has clearly shown incompetence, you say you prefer him even to the best in the world.

And now, you say no alternative to him. Now I understand why we are like this:

WE HARDLY UNDERSTAND WHAT LEADERSHIP IS ALL ABOUT!
