Abuja (Sundiata Post) – A statement from the Head, Corporate Communications Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED), Dr. Friday Elijah, has warned the general public to refrain from building close to or under electricity conductors as it is hazardous for human habitation.
Electricity conductors known as overhead power lines carry high voltage for energy distribution to various units and channels, our correspondent reports.
Speaking during a sensitization awareness campaign in its four franchised States, the statement reads that the Managing Director JED, Engr. Abdu Mohammed said if the “Right of Way” is strictly adhered to, the danger of building under the electricity conductors will be easily avoided.
According to the draft, Mohammed who was represented by the Head of Safety, Mr. Alvinmax Yenkwo, added: “Always shun the temptation of constructing your houses under or by the sides of the electricity conductors”.
He said: “The Right of Way (RoW) is the distance of any structure from the middle conductors of overhead power lines of any voltage level.
“The voltage levels are in meters within the range of 330kV 50, 132kV 30, 33kV11 or 11kV 11”, he said.
Mohammed emphasized further that: “No structures shall be built under the overhead line Right of Way.
“Where such structures are built after the construction of the lines, the company shall not be liable for any mishap caused by contact with the line”, he said.
A conductor is an object or type of material that allows the flow of electric current in one or more directions.
Materials made of metal are common electrical conductors. The flow of negatively charged electrons generates electric current, positively charged holes, and positive or negative ions in some cases, our reporter says.
