Lagos – The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Tuesday in Lagos, charged army officers to acquire leadership skills to effectively discharge their constitutional roles to the society.
Buratai gave the charge at a seminar entitled, “Strategic Thinking and Organisational Effectiveness’’, for Lieutenant Colonels and Colonels at the Nigerian Army Finance Corps, Apapa, Lagos.
Buratai, represented by the Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Signal, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel White, urged the officers to always show qualitative leadership skills to their subordinates wherever they find themselves.
“The choice of the theme is a clear indication that the army is not left behind in the advocacy for change in the country today.
“This warranted the army headquarters to sustain its drive towards leadership effectiveness across all levels of command.
“This gathering is a reassurance of the commitment of the Nigerian Army’s attachment to capacity building and career progression of its personnel within the ranks of lieutenant colonels and colonels.
“The leadership development seminar is aimed at educating participants in modern methodologies that are important in the drive for change and innovation in the discharge of our constitutional duties,’’ he said.
He added that the Nigerian Army was an important component in the Nigerian society and therefore, deserves competent and effective leaders.
“Leadership development in the army is imperative due to emerging challenges in ethno-religious upheavals, militancy and terrorism across the country.
“To successfully handle the current challenges, there is need for purposeful and dynamic leadership across all the chains of command.
“As senior officers, this seminar should be perceived as a veritable forum for acquiring the necessary expertise that will be critical in confronting challenges of leadership in all commands at various levels.
“I enjoin you to uphold this initiative and contribute meaningfully to the discussion as the seminar goes on,’’ Burutai said.
Earlier the Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration, Brig.-Gen. Bamidele Taiwo, in his address of welcome, urged the participants to key into the seminar aimed at improving their leadership qualities.
The News of Nigeria (NAN) reports that more than 20 officers are participating in the 9th edition of the seminar which will end on June 16.
