ABUJA – An FCT Area Court in Lugbe, on Friday sentenced a 30-year-old businessman, Dalibu Naawa, to six months imprisonment for stealing two laptops and a cell phone.
Naawa of Karamajiji village, Airport Road Abuja, was sentenced on a one-count charge of theft.
The convict, after pleading guilty to the crime, in tears begged the court for leniency.
“I wanted to send some money to my ailing mother in the village and I had no money; have mercy on me, I will not do it again,’’ he pleaded.
“I don’t know what lured me into this act; I gave the laptops and the phone to Awalu Ibrahim to keep for me.
“Please sir, tamper justice with mercy; this is my first time to steal.
The Judge, Gambo Garba, who handed down the sentence, gave him an option to pay N10, 000 fine.
Garba warned the convict to desist from committing crime, saying that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Anigbo Paul, told the court that one Sawudi Sani and Jamilu Babangida reported the matter at Lugbe Police Station, Abuja, on April 27.

Paul said that the convict broke into the complainants’ room at night while they were sleeping and stole one Dell laptop; a HP laptop and one LG mobile phone, all valued at 115,000.
He said that the complainant recovered one of the phones from Awalu Ibrahim after several searches.
However, the prosecutor prayed the court to try the accused persons summarily since they admitted committing the crime.
Paul said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
