Lagos, – A 19-year-old businessman, Chinonso Eweren, who allegedly assaulted a co-tenant for dumping a dead rat near his apartment, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Eweren, a resident of No. 62, Old Ewu Road, Mafoluko, Oshodi, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and assault.
Prosecutor George Nwosu told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb.27 at his apartment.
According to him, the accused unlawfully assaulted a co-tenant, Mr Ebuka Agbo, who he accused of throwing a dead rat on his verandah.
“The smelling rat sparked off an argument between them and the accused ordered Agbo to pick up the dead rat or be dealt with.
“Irked by his refusal, the accused punched Agbo and subsequently picked a big stone and hit his neighbour on the head.
“The victim bled heavily and fainted, and it was the landlord and other co-tenants that quickly rushed him to the hospital,” Insp. Nwosu said.
“The complainant is still lying at the General hospital.’’

The offences, Nwosu said, contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 166 provides three months or N45, 000 fine, while Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, adjourned the case to March 16 for mention. (NAN)
