Canada tasks Nigeria on non-violent elections

ABUJA – Canada Wednesday appealed to Nigerians to ensure non-violence in the upcoming general elections.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rob Nicholson, said in a that the elections were critical to consolidation of democracy in Africa.

“As Nigeria prepares to hold presidential, legislative and state elections, Canada Nigeria to take all necessary steps to ensure that the elections are , free, fair and credible.

“These elections are critical to reinforcing democracy in Nigeria and offer a valuable opportunity for Nigeria to set a positive example of democratic elections in Africa,” he Nicholson said.

He said upholding democratic values was the collective responsibility of all political parties and state institutions in Nigeria.

Nicholson said democratic values included promoting peaceful dialogue and rejecting violence in the event of a loss or disputed result.

According to him, the professionalism and impartiality of security agencies during and after the elections are paramount to achieving a peaceful electoral process. (NAN)
