Lagos – A capital market expert, Mr Peter Ashade, has urged both the private and public sectors to collaborate for sustainable economic growth and development in Nigeria.
Ashade, Managing Director, African Prudential Registrar’s Plc, made the plea on Wednesday at the 2018 Company Secretaries and Registrars’ Forum, organised by the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSAN) in Lagos.
Theme of the forum is entitled: “Company Secretaries and Registrars: A Functional Partnership For Capital Market Development.’’
According to Ashade, both private and public sectors must work together to develop the country in term of infrastructural.
“The capital market plays a key role in the development of any economy and we know that for infrastructural development and other, long term funding is very important.
“You cannot develop critical infrastructure with short term funding; so, capital market offers that opportunity for long term funding,” he said.
Ashade said that the manufacturing sector had suffered greatly during the nation’s economic recession as many companies folded up and lots of people lost their jobs.
He said that there was hope if each sector could play its role in the development of the nation’s economic.
“We are hoping that if the private sector plays its part, public sector its part, and capital market plays its part, the country will be back fully and people will begin to have foods on their tables.
“To build a robust capital market capable of supporting the economy of sustainable growth, ICSAN have a vital role to play.
“We must work together to ensure that confidence is completely restored in our capital market, which will lead to growth and development, both in our market and economy,” Ashade said.
In his remarks, Mr Samuel Kolawole, the ICSAN president, said that the forum aimed at exposing participants to the modern day practices and practical solution to problems on corporate secretarial and other related issues.
According to Kolawole, this is a very apt theme that underscores the overlapping functions of the corporate secretaries and registrars and the imperative for synergy between these two classes of professional.
Kolawole, represented by his vice, Mr Bode Ayeku, said that the forum would offer wider latitude of opportunities between company secretaries and registrars.
He said that the institute had organised various programmes for its members, professional in allied fields, other stakeholders as well as members of the public.
Kolawole said that ICSAN was the only professional body authorised in Nigeria to conduct the examination leading to the qualification of Chartered Secretary and Administrators.
Also, Mrs Nkechi Onyenso, the Registrar of ICSAN, said that the institute had consistently promoted the ideals of corporate governance through issuance of communique, policy papers and guidance materials on corporate and public administration.
Onyenso said that theme of the forum showed the predilection of the institute’s engagement of contemporary issues with aggressive, positive and pragmatic views for national growth and development. (NAN)
