The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in collaboration with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), has launched the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) platform—an innovative digital solution designed to provide banking access for Nigerians living overseas.
According to a statement posted on the CBN’s official 𝕏 handle on Wednesday, the Governor of the apex bank, Olayemi Cardoso, described the initiative as a major stride toward advancing financial inclusion. He highlighted that the NRBVN platform represents a key milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to innovation, inclusive growth, and global economic integration.
CBN Governor, Cardoso explained that the new system enables Nigerians abroad to remotely and securely obtain their BVN, using digital identity verification and strengthened Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.
He added that the NRBVN provides a central digital platform through which Nigerians in the Diaspora can open bank accounts, make secure transfers, and access other banking services with greater ease and at lower costs.
Cardoso also urged Nigerian financial institutions to develop tailored products for the Diaspora community, noting that such measures would not only promote financial inclusion but also help boost remittance inflows through formal channels.
Reiterating the CBN’s remittance goal, Cardoso emphasized the target of achieving \$1 billion in monthly inflows. He also called on all market participants to adhere to the Foreign Exchange Code and other regulatory frameworks to ensure stability and confidence in the financial system.
