LAGOS – An NGO, Women’s Technology and Empowerment Center (W.TEC) on Saturday said that it had trained over 5,000 women and girls in Information Technology (IT) programme.
Mrs Oreoluwa Somolu, the Executive Director of the organisation disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Somolu said that the beneficiaries were trained through the centers programme such as W.TEC Technology Camp, Alumni Network and Research.
“We run a technology and training programme where we have trained over 5,000 women and girls,’’ she said.
She said that the objective of the W.TEC technology camp was to help the girls develop an early interest in computers and other information technology.
Somolu said that the long term goal was to increase the number of Nigerian women using technology productively for learning, professional and leadership activities.
She listed the workshops conducted by the center to include Scratch Programming, Mobile Application Designing (using App Inventor), Digital Photography, Digital Video Production, Digital Advocacy and Excursions to technology companies.
The director said that the center would in the nearest future assist beneficiaries by giving them grants to become self-employed.
She said that the center was faced with the normal challenges of funding due to the many programmes that were being organised.
Somolu urged well-meaning Nigerians and philanthropic organisations to support the center so that the women would have a chance in IT.
“You make a difference and definite impact in the life of many Nigerian women and girls when you donate your time, talent, equipment or money to their development in IT,’’ she said. (NAN)
