Lagos, Nov. 4, 2015 (NAN) The Centre for Global Solutions and Sustainable Development (CENGSSUD) on Wednesday expressed confidence that poverty could be eradicated by 2030, as targeted by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mr Debo Adeniyi, the Executive Director of the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) made the remark at a sensitisation campaign for the public and policy makers in Lagos.
The campaigned was held at the State Ministry of Agriculture, Alausa, Ikeja.
Adeniyi said that the campaign was pertinent, to ensure the success of the SDGs.
According to him, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which winded down in July did not achieve their aims because of poor senstisation.
He said that poverty could be eradicated by 2030, if the primary objective of the SDGs was properly implemented.
The SDGs are a 17-point- agenda set in September by more than 180 world leaders, to eradicate poverty by 2030.
Adeniyi said that the MDGs failed because there was no proper awareness and effort to engage leaders towards encouraging an all-inclusive society.
“The essence of the campaign and sensitisation about the newly-adopted SDGs is to create awareness.
“These goals are the entire agenda of the world on how global initiatives can reduce poverty among the populace in the next 15 years.
“World leaders came together and resolved that in the next 15 years, anything like extreme poverty will be a thing of the past and that there will be no more hunger on the surface of the earth.
“They also looked at climate change, peaceful coexistence, as well as justice and an inclusive society.
“We have been able to interpret these goals as the rights of the people.
“The 17 goals, which are pivotal to developmental change, address three main areas of the economy, social and environmental sustainability.

“CENGSSUD has considered it necessary because the slogan for the SDGs is `never leave anyone behind,’’ he said.
According to Adeniyi, the global agenda has made provisions in terms of energy and funds into this and organisations such as CENGSSUD are monitoring closely.
“We want to engage the policy markers before engaging the people,’’ he added. (NAN)
