Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Rotary international, district 1925, embarked on an awareness walk on Children’s day with the message of continuous immunization for Children aged 0-5.
The walk which centered on Jos busy market, tasked mothers to always take their new born babies for immunization as it will help to sustain the record that certified Nigeria as polio free country.
Rotarian Jane Egbo, the District Polio Chairperson for district 1925, who spoke with our reporter said though the status of Nigeria remains Polio Free, mothers should not relent in their quest to ensure that their babies are immunized, hence the essence of the awareness walk.
According to her: “We choose the Children’s Day celebration to have an awareness walk in a popular market in Jos, so that we can appeal to mothers to always remember to take their newborns for immunization.
“That the country is certified Polio Free does not mean that mothers should stop taking their babies for immunization because if they don’t, those babies may stand the risk of being a victim of Polio.
“It is always not good for a child to grow up in a wheelchair when his counterpart is walking and standing on his two legs.
“The market is a good location for this awareness because mothers trade here and today being children’s day, their young once on holidays will also be here with them, so the message will sink in.
“We communicated the message to them in 10 languages so as to reach them all, irrespective of language barrier”, Egbo said.
She reminded the public that the immunization is free world over because Rotary international has paid the bills.
“Rotary international is the sole sponsor of Polio Immunization world over”, she said.
Our correspondent reports that district 1925 covers 23 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory.
