Gwagwalada (FCT) – Mr Bako Da’orong, the Deputy Director, FCT Secondary Education Board on Saturday said the moral and social training of a child lied on both parents and teachers.
Da’orong, who works with the Monitoring and Evaluation Division of the board, said this at the 17th Graduation ceremony of King’s Kids International, Nursery, Primary and Secondary School in Gwagwalada, FCT.
Speaking on the topic “Child character and moral values development”, he explained that “a child is not yet an adult; not yet mature to do anything reasonable, therefore, he depends on parents for good character moulding.’’
He said that home was the first institution for a child to learn good character moulding because he spends most of his time with the parents.
Da’orong, however, advised parents and teachers to be of good example to children as they always learn by imitation.
“As parents, do we have time for the children? A child learns more by seeing. Do you tell lies, fight or always quarreling in the house?
“Whoever spares the rod hates the child, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.”
“When a child is born, the immediate forces in the environment such as the school, religious organisations and the home have great effects on the character and moral values development of the child.
“This can either be positive or negative and the forces that play vital roles in determining the child’s character and moral values development are the school, parents and religious organisations.”
Da’orong said that peer group influence, teachers’ attitude and the kind of activities children were exposed to also played vital roles in their moral values.
He therefore urged parents to bring up their children in the way that they would add value to the society to prevent them from being nuisances in the society.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 65 students graduated from the school for 2016/2017 academic session. (NAN)
