ENUGU – Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has called for prayers and support from religious organisations and citizens to enable the incoming administration in the state to succeed.
Chime made the call in Enugu on Thursday at the Interdenominational Church Service to usher in the new administration.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Rev. Ralph Nwoye, commended the citizens of the state for their support during his eight-year tenure.
“We are here today to thank God for the eight years of grace and peace in the state, the peaceful conduct of the elections and the victory of our party in the state.
“We thank the church and the people for their support throughout our tenure.
“I plead with you to extend the same hand of fellowship to the incoming administration of Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi because he needs your support, prayers and tolerance to succeed.
“If you have ever prayed for me once, I want you to double it in the next eight years for Ugwuanyi.
“As we enter into a new phase of governance tomorrow (Friday), I want to appreciate all of you who contributed to our successes,’’ he said.
Earlier in a message titled `Celebration of Grace’, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, advised the incoming governor to put the interest of the people ahead of other challenges during his tenure.
Onaga, represented by a senior lecturer at the Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Eze, urged Ugwuanyi to handle issues with humility to produce desired results.
He advised the governor-elect that much work still needed to be done in the state.
“The task ahead is not an easy one so we all have to participate to make it easier for the incoming government.
“We pray that the spirit of God will empower Ugwuanyi for effective service to humanity.
“We must ensure that we rebuild our state in a way that it will please God,’’ he said.
The Methodist Archbishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Chris Edeh, called on the incoming administration to extend infrastructural development to the rural areas.
The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Enugu State, Rt. Rev. Chris Obiefuna, said the service was organised in collaboration with the association ton appreciate God for good governance.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prayers were said for the outgoing and incoming governments as well as for members of the state assembly.
