BEIJINGM- The 77 Chinese nationals arrested in Kenya over the past few days might have been involved in telecommunications fraud, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said at a daily press briefing that as Kenya’s long-term friend, China supported the country in fighting against all forms of crime.
According to media reports, police in Kenya say they have arrested 77 Chinese nationals who were allegedly running an elaborate money laundering and Internet fraud scheme from multiple houses.
“The case is under investigation at the moment. Initial results show that this probably is a case of telecommunication fraud,” she said.
Hua said China would actively cooperate with Kenya on related investigations.
She also expressed the hope that Kenya would protect the legal rights of the Chinese nationals and deal with the case in a just and proper way. (Xinhua/NAN)
