Quandong Geng, a Chinese national, has been sentenced to death for the murder of his girlfriend, Ummulkusum Sani Buhari, also known as Ummita, by Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court.
The landmark ruling was delivered on Tuesday, marking the culmination of a tragic incident that took place in September 2022.
The altercation occurred at Ummita’s residence in Kano, where Geng fatally stabbed her during a heated argument. After fleeing the scene, Geng was apprehended by the police and subsequently charged with murder.
During the trial, Geng disclosed the motive behind his actions, revealing that he was devastated by Ummita’s decision to marry another man despite his significant investments in their relationship. This included substantial financial contributions amounting to millions of naira and elaborate wedding preparations.
“I had traveled to Sokoto to meet with her family, where I spent N700,000,” Geng recounted in court. “However, on September 13, 2022, when she requested money for her house in Abuja, I was unable to provide it, as I was experiencing financial constraints. Subsequently, she ceased communication with me, assuming that I was financially destitute.”
Geng’s testimony shed light on the complex dynamics of their relationship and the tragic consequences that ensued. The verdict serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of unresolved conflicts and the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions.
