Mr Abdulraman Ajiya, the Chairman of Abaji Area Council of FCT, has cautioned residents of the area against indiscriminate disposal of waste and open defecation to prevent cholera outbreak.
Ajiya made the call in Abaji, while supervising the evacuation of waste undertaken by the environmental department of the council on Friday.
He frowned at the growing heaps of waste in some communities in the area council due to improper disposal and negligence by some residents.
The chairman said the residents must play a part in keeping the area council flood-free by clearing their drainages and ensure proper waste disposal at the approved dump sites.
According to him, sanitation should be a matter of necessity and should be observed daily in every home for the prevention of cholera and other communicable diseases in the area.
“The council is trying its best in terms of creating awareness on proper waste disposal but some residents have refused to do the right thing.
“In spite of the council’s prompt waste evacuation to keep the environment clean, some people have failed to comply with sanitation rules and regulations.
“I call on the residents to dispose waste adequately at the approved dump sites and stop open defecation to prevent cholera and other communicable diseases,” he said.
Ajiya stressed the need for regular sanitation and hygiene to ward off health hazards.
