Kaduna -The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised motorists travelling during the yuletide to drive carefully and avoid anything that can lead to accidents.

Alhaji Musa Illalah, the North West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, gave the advice in Kaduna on Thursday, while launching the agency’s ‘Operation Eagle Eye’, organised to sensitise motorists to the need to drive safely during the Christmas period.

“This is an annual event we organize at this time of the year to sensitize drivers to safe driving during Eid-Maulud, Christmas and the New Year celebrations.

“It is important we always support the Federal Road Safety Commission whose mandate is to oversee the roads and the road users during the festive periods,“ he said.

According to him, the agency is targeting all the four entry points to the state, namely: Kaduna-Abuja highway; Kaduna-Kachia highway; Kaduna-Zaria highway; and the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari highway.

“We intend to be on these roads for the next seven days to provide the needed support to FRSC so that together we can minimize the rate of accidents on our roads.

“It is a known fact that we witness more loss of lives via road accidents in this country than in any other emergency,’’ he said.

He assured FRSC that NEMA officials and other stakeholders would be on hand to offer their assistance during emergencies.

Mr Ademola Obafemi, the Kakau Unit Commander of FRSC in Kaduna, called on drivers to avoid night-driving, over-speeding, drink-driving, and overloading as they were capable of causing road accident.

He commended NEMA for its support towards ensuring the success of the campaign, adding that the partnership between the agencies had always yielded positive results. (NAN)
